John Hollis Baker
John Hollis Baker, Esq. is the immediate Past President of the Bar Association serving both Athens and Oconee County. He has practiced litigation in the Athens and throughout the State for 14 years. In that time, he hasreceived the highest honor from his peers in 2014 with an “AV” ranking for his litigation skills and ethics for litigation matters in and around Athens, GA involving personal injury, real estate litigation, and breach of contract litigation. John has a “superb” ranking on Avvo and was named one of the “Top 40 Under 40” by The National Trial Lawyers. He was also awarded “Nations Top One Percent” by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel.
John has led the way in Athens and throughout the State for aggressive and effective representation of seriously injured clients. In 2013, John made waves in trip and fall litigation by recovering $490,000.00 his Client who was injured on a hazardous condition at a retailer. The original offer to his Client in that case was $64,000.00 at mediation. The week before trial the insurance company offered to settle for more than 7 times the original offer. In 2014, John assisted to obtain the largest carbon monoxide poisoning verdict in the State that year by recovering $970,000 for a family who suffered carbon monoxide poisoning due to a leaking furnace. In 2015, John assisted a local family to recover nearly One Million Dollars for a family who was struck by and injured by a negligent employee of a roofing company. In that case, John retained the services of a occupational expert to determine the value of future loss of income to his Client. The proven damages, as well as the finding that the roofing vehicle was subject to mandatory federal regulations, resulted in the settlement of the case prior to the deposition stage.
A Sparta, Georgia native, John enters his fourteenth year in practice in Athens, GA after receiving his Juris Doctor from Mercer University in 2002. In addition to his work through the local bar association, John has recently served aschairman of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit Film Athens.
John’s litigation philosophy is not complicated…get the case to trial. While some attorneys may steer away from trial, John believes that a large corporation, or their insurance company, has little incentive to do right by his Clients until they are faced with something to lose. As a result, John pushes each plaintiff’s case toward trial, without unnecessary delay, understanding that the insurer would gladly allow the case to drag otherwise. Each Client deserves to be represented honestly, effectively, and aggressively.
